Sweeps & Seals Guide

Small Details That Make a Door Feel Right

Adding an Extra Measure of Protection

Most people don’t think about sweeps or seals until something feels off: A draft at your feet. A bit of light under the door. A rattle on a windy night. Or a few insects inside when they shouldn’t be.

Sweeps and seals are the parts that solve those problems.

A seal closes the space around the sides and top.

Together, they help your door feel solid, quiet, and protected from the weather.

This guide shows you what each piece does, when you need them, and how Vintage Doors builds them into your door for a clean, lasting fit.

Door Sweeps

A sweep is a strip attached to the bottom edge of the door. It closes the small space between the door and the threshold to keep out drafts, rain, dust, and insects while helping the door close with a smooth, finished feel.

  • Exterior doors: The sweep is built into your pre-hung unit at the workshop.

  • Screen and storm doors: The sweep is installed after the door is hung
so it can be adjusted perfectly to your threshold on site.

Door Seals

A seal runs along the top and sides of the jamb. When the door closes, the seal compresses slightly to fill small inconsistencies in the frame.

  • Reduces drafts and wind noise

  • Prevents rattling

  • Improves insulation and weather protection

Vintage Doors uses:

  • Kerf-in weatherstrip for exterior doors — clean, durable, and built directly into the jamb.

  • Bulb seals for screen and storm doors — fitted neatly to the wooden stop.

Do You Need Sweeps and Seals?
Whether you are installing a screen and storm door or an custom exterior door, adding sweeps and seals can add a welcoming extra measure of weather protection.

Screen and Storm Doors

Sweeps and seals are optional, but highly recommended, especially if you want:

  • fewer drafts

  • fewer insects

  • tighter seasonal performance

  • a smoother, more solid close

If you’re installing the door yourself, adding both a sweep and a perimeter seal helps the door sit comfortably against the frame.

Exterior Doors

Every exterior pre-hung unit from us includes a full sweep-and-seal system as standard — no add-ons needed. These pieces:

  • improve insulation

  • eliminate gaps and rattles

  • help the door nestle cleanly into the jamb

  • protect against weather over time

Replacing an older door? Fresh seals can often fix minor air leaks without major carpentry.

How Vintage Doors Builds Them

We size every sweep and seal to the exact door you order — no universal strips or one-size-fits all kits.

For Screen & Storm Doors

  • Sweeps slide into a small wooden molding we custom-mill for your door.

  • That molding is attached after installation so the sweep can sit at the perfect height.

  • Bulb seals are added to the applied stop for a tighter close.

For Exterior Doors

  • Sweeps and seals are included. They come built into the pre-hung jamb, no need to add them.

  • The bottom sweep mounts directly to the underside of the door.

  • Kerf-in weatherstrip sits neatly in the jamb for a clean, long-lasting fit.

Seals can be trimmed for a perfect field fit. If you notice a small gap between the sweep and threshold, the threshold can be raised or lowered to meet the sweep — all our exterior thresholds are adjustable.
