Finishing & Sealing

Your new door has been built to last — but like any fine piece of furniture, it needs to be properly sealed and finished before installation to perform its best.

  • Timing: Seal and finish all surfaces (including mortised and drilled areas) within 1–2 weeks of delivery.

  • Environment: Keep unfinished doors stored indoors in a warm, dry, moisture-free space until finishing is complete. Never store unfinished doors in damp areas or exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Methods:
    • Painted Finish: One coat of primer and two top coats of exterior-grade paint.
    • Stained/Varnished: Three coats of high-quality varnish, applied evenly.

Leaving any surface unfinished or exposed may cause warping or cracking and will void your warranty. For step-by-step guidance, visit our How to Finish Your Door page.

Care & Maintenance

Every Vintage Door is built to last for decades. With regular care, it will age gracefully and grow richer in character over time.

We recommend inspecting your exterior door annually for signs of weathering, especially if it faces south or west sunlight. Look for fading, drying, or wear in the finish. Light maintenance and re-coating will preserve the wood and protect it from the elements.

As a general guideline:

  • High exposure (south/west): Recoat every 2–3 years.
  • Lower exposure (north/east): Recoat every 3–5 years.

We recommend premium finishes like Sikkens, designed specifically for solid wood doors..

Shipping & Delivery

Every Vintage Door is shipped fully insured via trusted national carriers and delivered directly to your home, business, or job site.

Each order is packed in a custom-built wooden crate to ensure it arrives safely.

Most doors ship by freight truck.

The carrier will contact you by phone or text to schedule a delivery window.

A customer representative must be present to unload the crate and sign for delivery.

Please inspect your order carefully upon arrival and note any visible damage on the delivery receipt before signing.

For full details, view our Shipping Policy.

Claims & Damages

If your order arrives damaged:

  1. Inspect immediately and note any damage on the delivery receipt while the carrier is present.
  2. If you see major damage, you may decline delivery and the carrier will return the shipment to us for replacement. Not sure whether to refuse or accept? Give us a call—we’ll help you choose the right path forward.
  3. Keep all packaging materials for inspection or return shipping.

Proper documentation at delivery is required for Vintage Doors to file or process a claim on your behalf. For minor surface damage, our team will work with you directly to determine the best repair or resolution.

Return Policy

Because every Vintage Door is custom-built to your order, all door and millwork sales are final.

We cannot accept returns or issue refunds on handcrafted items once an order is in production.

Hardware Returns & Replacements

Hardware may be returned within 3 days of receipt, in its original packaging and with proof of purchase. A 25% restocking fee applies.

Installed, damaged, or incomplete hardware (including stripped screws or missing parts) cannot be returned.

Special-order hardware is non-returnable and non-refundable.

Please report any shortages, concealed damage, or defects within 1–3 days of delivery (hardware defects within 30 days). All returns must be pre-approved by Vintage Doors.

Customers are responsible for return shipping unless the hardware is defective. Defective items will be inspected and replaced under the manufacturer’s warranty.
