How to Measure Your Door

A Simple Guide for First-Time Measurers

Getting accurate measurements is the first step to a door that fits and performs the way it should. Homes settle, frames shift, and openings are rarely perfect, which is why we build every door to the numbers you provide.

This guide walks you through exactly what to measure, using the method that matches what you already have.

Get your tools ready: you’ll need a tape measure and some place to write down measurements. A level is helpful as well, but optional.

Before You Start: Choose What You Need Need To Measure

The right measuring approach depends on your door and your doorway.

An Existing Door

Use this only if your current door fits well and swings smoothly.

No need to remove the door — just measure:

  • Width: Edge to edge across the door face

  • Height: Top edge to bottom edge (not the sill)

  • Thickness: Door edge where the latch is

Record as: Width × Height × Thickness

Example: 32" × 80" × 1¾"

We’ll build the new door to match these exact dimensions.

If your old door rubs or sticks:
Skip this method and measure the finished opening instead.

Maple

A Finished Opening

Use this when you have an existing frame and just need a door that fits.

You’re measuring the clear space inside the frame, where the door actually moves.

This method is right if:

  • You’re keeping your frame

  • Your current door doesn’t fit well

  • You have a framed opening from a renovation

You’ll take four measurements:

Left Height (A–B)

Inside top jamb to floor or sill

Right Height (C–D)

Inside top jamb to floor or sill

(Heights may differ; this is normal.)

Top Width (E–F)

Inside left jamb to inside right jamb

Bottom Width (G–H)

Inside left jamb to inside right jamb

(Floors can slope; widths may vary.)

Record as: A–B, C–D, E–F, G–H

Example: 80¼" | 80" | 31⅞" | 32"

We’ll size your new door slightly under these numbers for a clean field fit.

Tip: Measure only the inner wooden frame, not the casing or trim.

Maple

A Rough Opening

Use this for new builds or when replacing a full pre-hung unit (door + jamb).

A rough opening is simply the unfinished space framed by studs.

Measure:

  • Width: Stud to stud

  • Height: Subfloor to underside of header

  • Depth: Wall thickness to confirm jamb depth

Record as: Width × Height × Depth

Example: 34½" × 82" × 4⅝"

If you see bare studs, you’re in the right place.
If you see painted or stained trim, use the finished opening method instead.

A Pre-Hung Screen & Storm Door on a Jamb

Choose this option when your new screen & storm door will include a jamb.

Choose this option when your new door will include a jamb. This applies to porch and patio openings, breezeways, or any situation where there is no existing jamb to reuse.

Measure the rough opening:

  • Width: Stud to stud

  • Height: Subfloor to header

  • Depth: Wall thickness

Record as: Width × Height × Depth

Example: 32½" × 82" × 4⅝"

A Screen & Storm Door on Brick Molding

Use this method when your new screen or storm door mounts in front of your main entrance door, not inside the existing interior jam

You’ll take four measurements:

Left Height (A–B)

Inside top jamb to floor or sill

Right Height (C–D)

Inside top jamb to floor or sill

(Heights may differ — this is normal.)

Top Width (E–F)

Inside left jamb to inside right jamb

Bottom Width (G–H)

Inside left jamb to inside right jamb
(Floors can slope; widths may vary.)

Record as:

A–B, C–D, E–F, G–H
Example: 80¼" | 80" | 31⅞" | 32"

Maple

A Round Top Door

Arched openings look intimidating, but the measurements are straightforward.

Measure:

  • Width: Inside jamb to inside jamb at the base

  • Height A (Straight Side): Bottom to where the arch starts

  • Height B (Overall): Bottom center to peak of the arch

  • Radius: If known (we can calculate it if not)

Older frames shift over time — note small variations.

Record as:

Width, Height A, Height B, Radius (if known)

Example: Width: 36" | Height A: 68½" | Height B: 82" | Radius: unknown

Double-check these:

  • Measuring method used
  • Final Width × Height × Thickness
  • A–B, C–D, E–F, G–H if you measured a finished opening
  • 2–3 photos of your opening (corners, sills, molding, arch)
  • Notes about slope or irregular trim

We confirm all measurements before building.
